Watching Porn Linked To Decline in Marriages

By News Desk

Ever wondered what was putting people off from the prospect of getting married? Well, researchers from Germany seem to have nailed it.

They blame the rise of Internet porn for lower marriage rates, claiming that men find “low-cost sexual gratification’ in porn and that too without being tied to a relationship.

They say that pornography is an “important factor” in the decline in marriage formation and that it was “disrupting traditional family arrangements”.

Fearing the emotional complexities of a relationship, men, the researchers say, take refuge in online pornography.

The research, published in the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Germany, states: “If one of the important reasons to get married has a low cost alternative, then it is natural to wonder about the extent to which one can replace the other. The results in this paper suggest that such an association exists, and that it is potentially quite large.”

The researchers surveyed more than 1500 men, aged between 18 and 35 years, analyzing how they used the Internet between 2000 and 2004 when its access was negligible compared to the current times.

How many hours each participant spent and how many looked at porn versus religious sites, adjusting for variables like age, income, education, religiosity, and employment were analysed by the researchers.

The general trend was that higher Internet use was linked to lower marriage rates.

In contrast, those who regularly used religious websites were more likely to be married.

Celebrating the findings of the research, a commentator wrote on a tabloid: “Marriage is hugely biased in favour of feminist, masculine women. If they don’t need us men anymore as they claim, why do they suck up most of our assets after the inevitable divorce: half of our house and pension and of course alimony for life; and we seldom, if ever, see our own children.

“Let’s hope modern marriage continues to rot.”
