SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 25: A Jaish-e-Muhammad militant was killed in a brief shootout with the government forces in Awantipora area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Sunday, police said.

“On a credible input about the presence of militants, a swift search operation was launched jointly by Police and security forces at Bathien area of Khrew in Awantipora, said a police spokesman, in a statement.

“As the searches were going on, the search party was fired upon by the militant. The fire was retaliated leading to a brief exchange of gunfire.”

He said the militant was killed in the exchange of fire. “Incriminating materials including arms & ammunition AK 47 Rifle and Magazines were recovered from the killed militant,” said the spokesman.

“From the incriminating material recovered, it is learnt that the killed militant is a Pakistani codenamed as Waseem. He was affiliated with proscribed outfit JeM.

Police has registered a case in this regard and area is being searched.”

Earlier in the day, six militants, a soldier and a civilian were killed in a gunfight subsequent clashes in Batgund village of Shopian district.
