SRINAGAR, FEBRUARY 8: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday said that strong winds and heavy accumulation of snow was slowing down the rescuers trying to reach the site of an avalanche that buried a police post near Jawahar Tunnel in Kulgam district last evening.

“Rescue teams are trying their best to reach the site. Strong wind and accumulation of snow on the path are making it difficult albiet the teams are nearby the site,” police said on Twitter.

Ten people were reported missing after an avalanche hit the police post near the tunnel. The missing people comprise six policemen, two fire service personnel and two prisoners.

Meanwhile, the strategic 300 km-long road remained closed for the third consecutive day on Friday due to heavy snowfall and landslides, police said.

No traffic was allowed on the highway on Friday due to multiple avalanches in the Banihal sector and landslides in the Ramsoo-Ramban area.
