Armed with guns and grenades, two militants stormed into Rajbagh police station at 6:20 am and killed a guard at the main gate before making their way into the main compound of the station.

The first floor of the compound is occupied by CRPF men, police sources said.

They said that militants threw grenades at the station, located around 12 miles from the International Border (IB) between India and Pakistan in Jammu.

“The gunfight is over and we have launched a search operation at the site now,” said Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police, K Rajendra.

“A police constable, two CRPF personnel and a civilian were killed in the gun-battle besides the two militants.”

This is the first major militant strike in the disputed region since the new PDP-BJP coalition government came to power.

The tremors of the attack were felt in the Kashmir legislative assembly and the Indian parliament where Home Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the forces for killing the militants.

“We admire and commend the work done by our security forces,” Singh said in a statement in Lok Sabha today.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that the militants might have made their way into this side from across the Pakistani side.

“These Fidayeen will have walked across the border last night & launched their attack this morning which is the past pattern as well,” Abdullah tweeted.

“My thoughts are with those brave security personnel dealing with the Fidayeen attack in Kathua town of Jammu this morning.”
