19 injured in Sopore grenade blast, One Critical

At least 19 persons including four women were wounded, one of them critically, in a grenade blast in Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Monday.

Witnesses said suspected militants carried out the attack near Sopore General Bus Stand late in the afternoon. A witness said street vendors had set up stalls in the market and people were busy shopping at the time of the attack.

Soon after the incident, many youth rushed to the spot and removed the injured to Sub-District Hospital (SDH), Sopore, said the witness.

“We received 19 persons with splinter injuries. Most of them were discharged after receiving first aid. However, six of them including a crtically injured woman were referred to Srinagar for advanced treatment,” said DrAzmat of SDH Sopore. An official said six of the injured referred to Srinagar’s Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital (SMHS) included four women.

The Senior Superintendent of Police Sopore Javiad Iqbal said militants carried out the attack. “The attack was aimed to create fear among the people who were busy shopping”, said the SSP. He said there was no security personnel present in the area when militant carried the attack.

According to records at SDH Sopore, the injured were identified as Javaid Ahmed Sofi, Assadullah, Ishfaq Ahmed, Ashoor Ahmed, Mushtaq Ahmed Dar, Bashir Ahmed, Barkat Ahmed, Rabiya Begum, Iram Begum, Samina Begum, Farooq Ahmed, Nisar Ahmed, Shafat Ahmed, Jabeena Begum, Adnan, Shakir Ahmed Dar, ZahidSofi, Abdul Khaliq, Rafia and Shahnawaz.

Soon after the attack, police and paramilitary forces cordoned off the area and launched a massive search operation to nab the attackers.
