Srinagar, Jan 8: An elderly Kashmiri Pandit couple was allegedly assaulted at their residence in Srinagar’s Rajbagh area on Thursday, prompting police to arrest three persons, including a dismissed Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, officials said.
According to official sources, police took immediate cognisance of the incident after receiving information about the assault on the couple, identified as Ashok Toshkhani and his family members. Preliminary investigations revealed that Vivek Batra, a former IRS officer who was earlier dismissed from service, along with several associates, forcibly entered the house and allegedly attacked the occupants.
The accused also allegedly attempted to set the house on fire during the incident, creating panic in the neighbourhood. Several women sustained injuries in the assault and were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Police swung into action and arrested three accused persons in connection with the case, while efforts are on to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the attack. Legal proceedings have been initiated under relevant sections of law.
Officials said further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact motive behind the assault.
