New Delhi, Nov 10: At least eight people were killed and 24 others injured after a powerful explosion tore through a car outside Gate No. 1 of Lal Quila Metro Station, near Delhi’s iconic Red Fort, on Monday evening. The high-intensity blast triggered panic in the densely populated Old Delhi area, officials said.
According to sources, the explosion occurred in a parked vehicle around 7 pm, sending up a huge fireball that engulfed several nearby cars. The impact of the blast was so strong that it shattered windows and set multiple vehicles ablaze.
Emergency services swung into action immediately, with 20 fire tenders and nearly a dozen ambulances rushing to the spot to rescue the injured and control the flames. All the injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.
“I saw body parts lying on the road,” said an eyewitness. Another resident added, “I saw a massive fireball from my terrace. The blast was deafening and caused chaos all around.”
The Delhi Police Special Cell, along with forensic experts, has cordoned off the site and launched an investigation. The cause of the explosion is yet to be confirmed, though officials are not ruling out foul play.
The blast site, located close to Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib and about a kilometre from Jama Masjid, falls in one of the most crowded parts of the national capital — Purani Dilli (Old Delhi). Traffic has been diverted from the Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, and Daryaganj areas as authorities continue search and rescue operations.
Visuals from the scene showed charred vehicles, heavy smoke, and widespread damage, indicating the intensity of the explosion. Security has been tightened across Delhi, and senior officials are monitoring the situation closely.
