Haryana Para-Athlete Dies After Attack for Confronting Harassers at Wedding in Bhiwani

Rohtak/Bhiwani, Dec 2: A 26-year-old national-level bodybuilder and para-athlete from Haryana’s Rohtak district died on Saturday after he was brutally assaulted for confronting a group of men allegedly harassing women at a wedding in Bhiwani, officials said.

The victim, identified as Rohit Dhankhar, had attended the wedding along with a friend. According to eyewitnesses, he intervened when a group of youths allegedly passed inappropriate remarks at women present at the function. Though the argument appeared to have ended at the venue, the matter escalated as Dhankhar was returning home later that night.

Police said Dhankhar’s car was intercepted near a railway crossing, where a mob of around 18 to 20 men, armed with sticks, rods and hockey sticks, allegedly ambushed him. His friend managed to escape. Dhankhar suffered multiple serious injuries and was first taken to a local hospital before being referred to PGIMS Rohtak, where he succumbed to his injuries the next day.

A Decorated Athlete

Dhankhar, a resident of Humayunpur village in Rohtak, was a well-known para-athlete and had won medals at national competitions in the 107+ kg category. He also worked as a gym trainer and was considered a promising talent in bodybuilding circles.

His death has sparked outrage in the community, with locals mourning the loss of a young athlete known for his discipline, hard work and sporting achievements.

Police Action Underway

A case of murder has been registered, and police have detained several suspects while efforts are underway to identify and arrest all those involved in the attack. Preliminary investigation indicates the assault was a planned retaliation for Dhankhar’s intervention at the wedding.

Family members have demanded strict punishment, saying Rohit “paid with his life for defending the dignity of women.”

Broader Concerns

The killing has reignited debate over the dangers faced by individuals who intervene in cases of harassment, as well as concerns about rising incidents of mob violence. Activists have called for stronger protection mechanisms for bystanders who step in to prevent abuse.
