Kolkata, Nov 21: Strong earthquake tremors shook Kolkata and several adjoining districts on Friday morning, sparking panic among residents who rushed out of homes, offices and commercial complexes. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that the earthquake originated in Bangladesh.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact intensity or depth of the quake. So far, there are no reports of damage or casualties from the city or its neighbouring areas.
Residents took to social media to express their fear and describe the sudden jolt. “Small quake but big panic,” wrote user Supratim Maitra on X, noting how even a short tremor created alarm across several neighbourhoods.
Another resident, Vinay Kumar Dokania, shared that the tremors felt unusually long, saying, “That #earthquake lasted over 30 seconds and was very powerful.”
Disaster management teams are monitoring the situation, and further details are awaited.
