Srinagar, Dec 1: The woman who attempted self-immolation at Pratap Park in Srinagar on Saturday has died from her injuries, hospital officials confirmed early Monday morning. The incident, which took place in one of the city’s busiest public parks, had triggered panic among visitors and raised concerns over the circumstances leading to the desperate act.
According to officials, the 36-year-old woman poured petrol on herself and set herself ablaze inside the park, shocking onlookers. Locals immediately rushed to douse the flames and alerted authorities. Police personnel arrived quickly and shifted her to SMHS Hospital in critical condition.
Hospital sources told Kashmir News Trust that the woman suffered severe, life-threatening burns and was kept under intensive medical care. Despite continuous efforts by the medical team, she could not recover from the extensive injuries and passed away early Monday.
Police said they have taken cognisance of the incident and launched a formal investigation to determine the factors that drove the woman to the extreme step. Her identity and background are being verified, and officers are examining the sequence of events that unfolded before the self-immolation attempt.
The tragic incident has shocked the local community, with many calling for stronger mental-health support systems and public awareness to prevent such extreme acts.
