Bear on the Loose in Srinagar

Untraceable Bear Roaming Srinagar: CCTV Captures Fresh Evening Sightings in KU, Soura, Habak & Nigeen

Srinagar, Dec 3: A series of bear sightings across multiple Srinagar localities—including Kashmir University, Soura, Habak, NIT and Nigeen—has put residents on alert, with the Wildlife Protection Department urging the public to stay vigilant, especially after sunset.

The animal was first spotted inside the Kashmir University campus, and since then has been captured on CCTV moving through various neighbourhoods during evening hours. However, despite extensive searches, the bear has remained untraceable throughout the day.

A Wildlife Department official said teams have been deployed across suspected zones but have yet to encounter the animal directly.

“The bear has been observed mostly in the evenings. During the day, it hides somewhere. Our teams are alert and positioned across possible locations,” the official said.

He confirmed that all recent sightings have come from CCTV footage installed in residential areas, while on-ground teams have not managed to make physical contact.

Authorities are also investigating whether the movement involves a single bear or multiple animals, as patterns remain unclear.

Public Advisory Issued

The Wildlife Department has asked residents to:

  • Avoid isolated or poorly lit areas during the evening and night
  • Remain cautious while walking outdoors
  • Report any fresh sightings immediately

The unexplained movement of the bear across densely populated zones has created concern among locals, especially as winter reduces daylight hours.

More details are awaited as tracking operations continue.
